Mexican passport in Mexico: appointment, cost and requirements

How to book the appointment at the passport offices, what it costs in 2026 depending on validity, what each case requires (first time, renewal or minors) and what to bring that day.

Last reviewed:

We are a private service. The appointment is free at citas.sre.gob.mx and you can do the procedure yourself. If you prefer our support, we charge for our service.

In short

  • The appointment is free and has three official channels: citas.sre.gob.mx, the phone number 55 8932 4827 and WhatsApp at the same number (Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), press release 253).
  • In 2026, the SRE publishes these costs: MXN 1,795 for 3 years, MXN 2,440 for 6 years and MXN 4,280 for 10 years. People over 60 and people with a disability pay half (gob.mx/pasaporte).
  • You pay after booking and before the appointment, at the bank; the SRE stated in 2024 that you can also pay through online banking.
  • The photo is taken at the office and, if you meet the requirements, the passport is handed over the same day.

How to book the appointment

  • Online, at citas.sre.gob.mx. If you have a CURP (Mexico’s population registry code), you sign in with Llave MX; if not, with an email address.
  • By phone, at 55 8932 4827.
  • On WhatsApp, at 55 8932 4827. It is the SRE’s verified account; the portal links to it.

You have to book one appointment for each person who is going to apply for a passport (gob.mx/pasaporte, frequently asked questions). When you book, you choose the office: an SRE passport office (Oficina de Pasaportes) or a state or municipal liaison office (Oficina Estatal o Municipal de Enlace).

Source: SRE, costs as of January 1, 2026, based on article 20 of the Ley Federal de Derechos, the Mexican law that sets these fees. Amounts in Mexican pesos.

  • Who pays half: people over 60, people with a proven disability and agricultural workers in the program with Canada. For those workers, it does not apply to the 10-year passport.
  • Pay exactly what your payment form says.

How you pay

  • When: after booking, once you have your appointment confirmation, and before you go.
  • Where: according to the SRE, “only at bank teller windows or through online banking, never by transfers to third parties” (press release 253, July 4, 2024).
  • The receipt: keep it and bring it to the appointment.

Requirements

The current list is at gob.mx/pasaporte. Confirm it before you go.

Adults, first time

  1. A document that proves your nationality: a birth certificate issued by the Mexican civil registry or by a consulate, a certificate of Mexican nationality, a declaration of Mexican nationality by birth (declaratoria), a naturalization letter (carta de naturalización), a citizen identity card (cédula de identidad ciudadana) or a consular ID card (matrícula consular). The SRE asks for it when it cannot verify your nationality in its systems: bring it anyway.
  2. A valid official ID, in original, such as the voter ID (INE card). The Reglamento de Pasaportes, the passport regulations (art. 14), also mentions the professional license (cédula profesional), the military service card (cartilla militar liberada) and the INAPAM card, among others.

Renewal

  1. Your previous passport, in original. It serves to prove your nationality, unless any of your details has changed (Reglamento, art. 30).
  2. A valid official ID, in original.
  3. Your nationality document, such as the birth certificate. The SRE asks for it when it cannot verify your nationality in its systems: bring it anyway.

You can renew it before it expires, but you cannot have two valid passports at the same time (gob.mx/pasaporte, frequently asked questions).

Minors

  • Their nationality document, normally the birth certificate.
  • An ID for the minor with their details written the same way as on the birth certificate: for example, a school ID or, for children under 7, a letter from the pediatrician with a photograph.
  • Those who hold parental authority (patria potestad) or guardianship, usually both parents, present and with official ID.
  • If one of the parents cannot go, they can give their consent with form OP-7. It is signed at any passport office, without an appointment. It is valid for 90 calendar days and is good for a single passport (gob.mx/pasaporte).
  • If there is no consent from one of the parents, a judge’s ruling authorizing the passport is needed.

Validity depends on age: 1 year for children under 3, and 3 or 6 years from ages 3 to 17 (Reglamento, art. 28).

Special cases

  • Birth certificate registered late. If your birth was registered more than three years after it happened (for minors, more than one year), bring a supporting document: for example, your parents’ marriage certificate, the birth certificate of an older sibling registered on time or your primary school certificate (Reglamento, arts. 15 and 18).
  • Lost or stolen passport. File a report with the Ministerio Público (public prosecutor’s office), fill out the form they give you at the office and present the requirements as if it were the first time (gob.mx/pasaporte).
  • Names that do not match. The details on your ID must “match faithfully” those on your birth certificate (Reglamento, art. 14). Check the birth certificate, the CURP and the ID letter by letter.

The day of the appointment

What to bring:

  • Your nationality document.
  • Your valid official ID, in original, and a copy in case they ask for it.
  • Your previous passport, if it is a renewal.
  • The receipt for payment of the government fees, in original.
  • If it is for a minor: the minor, the parents or guardians with their ID, or form OP-7.

Do not bring photos: the photo is taken at the office, facing forward, in color, with a white background and without glasses (Reglamento, art. 14).

Delivery: according to the SRE, the passport is handed over the same day as the appointment if you meet the requirements and have paid the government fees. Check it before you leave: if it has a spelling error or an omission, it is replaced at no cost (Reglamento, art. 11).

What can go wrong

  • Details that do not match between the birth certificate and the ID.
  • A birth certificate registered late without its supporting document.
  • Documents in poor condition. They must be “legible and in good condition, with no crossings-out, corrections, deterioration or alteration” (Reglamento, art. 9).
  • Paying for a validity that does not match the age, for example the 10-year one for a minor. Check the validity before you pay.
  • Fake pages. The SRE asks you to check that the address is a gob.mx one with no alterations, warns that its pages never end in .com.mx and reminds you that payment goes to the bank, never by transfer to third parties (press release 253).

If you prefer our support

What it includes

  • Guidance: which validity applies to you and which documents your case requires: first time, renewal, minor or birth certificate registered late.
  • A review of your documents before the appointment: that the birth certificate, the CURP and the ID match letter by letter, and that you have the supporting document if one is needed.
  • Your appointment, at the office you prefer, with your details exactly as they appear on your birth certificate. One person per appointment; we do not resell or transfer appointments.
  • Preparation: when and how to pay, what to bring and what the appointment is like.
  • Follow-up: if the SRE cancels your appointment, we look for another one at no extra cost, and we stay with you until your procedure is completed.

We never hold on to your passport.

What you pay, and to whom

  1. The appointment: free at citas.sre.gob.mx.
  2. Government fees: at the bank, depending on validity; the 2026 amounts are in the table above.
  3. Our service: our fee depends on the procedure and the case. Write to us and we will give you the cost for yours before we start.

What does not depend on us

  • The date. Each office decides when appointments are available. No service guarantees a date.
  • The outcome. The SRE reviews your documents and decides whether to issue the passport.
  • Whether the appointment stands. The authority can cancel or change an appointment. If it cancels, we look for another one at no extra cost.
